THE Penang government is launching the ‘Wanita Jana Rezeki 2.0’ (WJR2.0) programme to help women from the B40 group to obtain income and financial independence.
State social development committee chairman Chong Eng said the programme was aimed at helping them generate income using their existing skills.
“This is a journey for them to obtain grants to help develop their businesses.
“This will allow them to build a sustainable business with quality products,” she said.
Chong Eng said participants with potential would be selected to join the Penang Women Entrepreneur Mentoring Programme (PWEMP).
“The PWEMP aims to fulfil the Penang2030 vision, that is to achieve a target of 40% women entrepreneurs by 2030,” she said during the WJR2.0 launching via Zoom on Thursday.
Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim, who is also WJR2.0 adviser, said the programme would target women from the B40 group across the 40 state constituencies.
“A total of 120 participants will be targeted in the programme.
“The Women and Family Development Committee in each constituency will be involved as a bridge between the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) and the participants in each constituency,” she said.
She added that there will be a stringent valuation process where participants will be filtered and evaluated before they are chosen to obtain the grants and have their products featured.
“There will be a few stages in this programme.
“It starts with registration, food preparation and delivery for the jury, food tasting and site visits to participants’ homes.
“This will be followed by the announcement of recipients for the WJR2.0 grant and finally, the marketing and sale of the products.
“The entire process, which has begun, will last until December this year, with the food tasting process to start from Aug 1.
“This process will be recorded through Google forms and the PWDC will analyse all the data,” she said.
PWDC chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng, who was present at the launch, assured that the programme would be held with adherence to the SOP.
“It is important to note that only the selected participants will receive the grant after going through a stringent process.
“The grant amount will be announced at a later stage,” she said.
