KENDRA REMAI: I started last year, 2020.
MNA: What inspired you to open your business?
REMAI: I’m a beach girl at heart. And also a heart lover, so I saw the opportunity to combine these two hobbies and open the business.
MNA: What makes Manistee a great place to have a business?
REMAI: It is a beautiful city and there are many opportunities for entrepreneurs and business owners to open shops, open something they are passionate about.
MNA: What are some of the ways your business is active in the local community?
REMAI: I am part of several committees and I volunteer. I am the president of Blossom Boulevard and I am also a member of the Sleighbell committee. I try to volunteer and raise funds throughout the year for other organizations.
MNA: What are your personal interests and hobbies?
REMAI: I like being outdoors, so I like being on the beach. I like kayaking, gardening and I also love to travel and cook.
MNA: What are some local companies you work with that make your business a success?
REMAI: I get a lot of support from other restaurants and also from all the companies on River Street. When people come to town, they look for fun things to do and see, so companies send them to our beautiful beaches.
MNA: What are your favorite local businesses?
REMAI: I love the TJ pub and I love visiting the Vogue Theater. Blue fish is a favorite and one of my favorite clothing stores is Anchor Designs in Onekama.
MNA: Other thoughts?
REMAI: I had an exceptional first year. I’m open every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so when things started to open up, people were excited to be out and my operation is dedicated to that. We offer takeaway and outdoor food, so it really worked for my benefit.
In addition to takeaway food, we sell ice and firewood and have a selection of beach towels, toys, sunscreen and more so people don’t have to leave the beach. We also rent chairs, armchairs, umbrellas, corn hole games, boogie tables, volleyball and more.
I have another store that I also opened last year. It’s an emerging Christmas store called Miracle on River, at 384 River St. I open in late October and am open every day until Christmas. I thought it was a must in Manistee for this kind of store and it’s a fun thing: all Christmas, decor, ornaments, gifts, really any Christmas.
In the fall I hang out on the beach and go to the River Street store. Then take a great break after Christmas. Today I open on Fifth Avenue beach and am there full time during Labor Day.
