The government’s ‘levelling up’ ambition is admirable but will be a missed opportunity if in ten years we do not see more thriving small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) and innovative start-ups in the country’s most deprived regions.
As one of the few FTSE 100 companies with global headquarters in the North East of England, I agree with the prime minister that while “talent and energy and enthusiasm and flair” are spread evenly across the UK, opportunity is not.
We know that a huge number of people in the UK want the opportunity to improve their economic circumstances. For many, setting up your own business, taking a punt on your dreams and being your own boss is one of the best ways to do this.
